the 10 creativity paradoxes

As Mihaly stated, there are 10 paradoxes which every creative people have, and I do also leave my comment to each number of those paradoxes.

1. Creative people have a great deal of physical energy, but they’re also often quiet and at rest.
I agree that creative people have a great deal of physical energy, since they are a very passionate on doing what they will achieve. On doing their work, or maybe when they concentrate at something, they become quieter. Not because they’re arrogant or something

2. Creative people tend to be smart yet naive at the same time.
In my opinion, creative people is definitely a smart people, they think, they innovate, they achieve something. Their naiveness is just another appearance of them who are concentrate and focus on what they do at that time. People who don’t know can just judge them and say that they are naive.

3. Creative people combine playfulness and discipline, or responsibility and irresponsibility.
Creative people is not combine playfulness with discipline, they just can adjust in any situation. The definitely can placed themselves properly in any situation. This makes people judge that creative people combine playfulness and discipline, or responsibility and irresponsibility.

4. Creative people alternate between imagination and fantasy, and a rooted sense of reality.
I agree with this opinion. Creative people can know on how and when they should alternate their thoughts between the imaginary and the reality.

5. Creative people trend to be both extroverted and introverted.
As I state above, creative people can be white, can be, blue, can be orange, can be black, based on the condition. People can’t just judge that they tend to be both extroverted and introverted. In fact, not only creative people, common people also can be both extroverted and introverted.

6. Creative people are humble and proud at the same time.
I agree with this statement, creative people can be proud with they humbleness as their outer appearance.

7. Creative people, to an extent, escape rigid gender role stereotyping.
Since creative people can bear with many abnormal issue and they tend to think outside the box, their openness often leads them to escape a rigid gender role stereotyping, also other sensitive issue or taboo matter, creative people could bear with that.

8. Creative people are both rebellious and conservative.
Creative people, definitely have a rebellious way of thinking, but they may be conservative on the outer side or in their daily life.

9. Most creative people are very passionate about their work, yet they can be extremely objective about it as well.
It is true that creative people are very passionate about their work and people who loves their work so much can be very subjective about it. Differenct with creative people, as they are usually think about many things outside the box and rebellious, that way of thinking leads them to the objective view of their own matters, in this case, their work.

10. Creative people’s openness and sensitivity often exposes them to suffering and pain, yet also to a great deal of enjoyment.
Openness and sensitivity is may leads to suffering and pain, also leads to a great deal of enjoyment, indeed. creative people can control their emotions by sharing their thoughts, channeling it to the masterpiece of work that unbelievably priceless, related to their emotions.

Wow. Thank God I attend Creativity and Innovation class. Selama 20 tahun saya hidup, saya nggak pernah tau kalo bisa ada company yang kerjanya ‘dibelakang layar’, ngurusin urusan company lain, dan ikut seneng kalo company itu sukses. Met IDEO, the company who did it all!
Hal pertama yang ada di pikiran saya waktu pertama kali tau kalo IDEO itu yang bikin desain produk Macintosh dan bahkan desain mouse computer yang sekarang ini udah dijual banyak di pasaran : ini company humble banget. Ga cuma Macintosh, Nestle, Samsung, dan Lufthansa, bahkan perusahaan clothing design and manufacturer asal New York, Eileen Fisher juga bekerja sama dengan IDEO untuk membantu company nya berkembang. Keren! Karena sejauh ini, yang saya tau, desain sebuah produk yang diproduksi oleh suatu company, berarti hasil dari orang-orang yang bekerja dibagian desain dan product development company itu. Yak dan ternyata saya salah.
IDEO, mengutamakan pembuatan desain yang menciptakan experience terhadap penggunanya, Setiap produk yang didesain mengandung added-value yang berbeda2 terhadap setiap orang. Experience yang terdapat didalamnya menjadikan IDEO sebagai perusahaan kreatif dan inovatif yang amat berpengaruh dalam industri tersebut.
Pastinya dong, setiap company pasti memiliki cara-caranya sendiri (we call it ‘their way’) agar bisa terus memenuhi keinginan customer-customernya secara maksimal. Yes, this is THE IDEO WAY, people:
1. OBSERVATION; Kegiatan ini mencakup memperhatikan cara orang-orang menggunakan produk yang mereka gunakan, cara mereka berbelanja, pergi ke rumah sakit, naik kereta, dan cara menggunakan handphone mereka. Selain itu juga memotret kegiatan-kegiatan masyarakat di ruang public seperti ruang tunggu di rumah sakit. Apa yang biasa orang-orang lakukan disana. Pada tahap selanjutnya mereka kemudian menginterview beberapa orang baik expert maupun awam tentang keberadaan suatu produk dan apa dampaknya bagi mereka.
2. BRAINSTORMING; Proses brainstorming yang hanya berlangsung 60 menit ini dapat menghasilkan lebih dari 100 ide, dan dalam implementasinya, setiap diskusi yang terjadi harus selalu tepat pada target dan ketika satu orang berbicara, orang lain tidak boleh menginterupsi, tidak boleh menyanggah, karena ide dari setiap orang akan sangat berharga. Ide yang paling out-of-the box lah yang akan terpilih.
3. RAPID PROTOTYPING; Dari proses observation dan brainstorming, ide-ide yang terpilih akan segera dibuat prototype nya. Dari prototype yang dibuat, secara otomatis akan muncul ide-ide kreatif lainnya dalam rangka pengembangan prototype tersebut yang menjadikan produk tersebut menjadi lebih keren, lebih berdaya jual tinggi, lebih mantaappp!
4. REFINING; Dalam poin ini, desain-desain terkuat akan lebih dikerucutkan lagi, satu langkah menuju penetapan desain yang akan disapprove oleh client. Dalam tahap ini, para client akan dihubungi dan ikut dalam proses pemilihan desain final.
5. IMPLEMENTATION; Yak. Proses final ini adalah proses dimana desain-desain yang telah dibuat menjadi nyata! Yeahhh! Selamat pada anda pencipta desain yang desainnya terpilih. Pasti bangga banget ya. Dalam tahap ini, seluruh workforce akan dikerahkan demi terciptanya produk baru yang amat berkualitas dan tentunya memiliki desain yang inovatif.
My dearest lovely reader (kalo ada yang baca), jadi jangan salah, ternyata kesuksesan suatu perusahaan besar dan ternama diluar sana, didukung oleh ‘the invisible hands’ yang peran nya hanya dibelakang layar aja. Dan yang namanya rezeki, emang ga akan kemana. Meskipun perannya dibelakang layar dan disebutnya ‘the invisible hands’, tetep aja IDEO bisa terus growing, terkenal juga, banyak dipake orang juga, terpercaya juga. God bless the humble IDEO!

Talking about creativity and innovation, I started to think about the most innovative thing ever existed in life. I’m thinking about Photocopy machine. Oh that is the most innovative thing, do you realized? It is such a super helpful machine which can give us many advantages, such as copying your documents, scanning paper, and even copy it to 8 times bigger from its original size!

Now, can you imagine, how your life’s gonna be without Photocopy machine; you have to write all of that college material and college books all by yourself. Or, you should make your design 8x larger from its original size all over again from the start. God bless the inventor of Photocopy Machine. Even was found like, a century ago, it will be useful for the next century, even when you have a super multitasking gadget like Blackberry or even smarter, you will still need that Photocopy machine. Your gadget still can not multiplied the books you borrowed from the library. Err.. by the way, this is Indonesia, man! Copying books and people’s work is still common in our daily life. If not, you will left behind and it is hard for you to keep up with everyone’s work. You disagree? I don’t care, baby.
